“Syria Without Camps” Discusses the Situation of Internally Displaced Persons with the United Nations

The Steering Committee of the “Syria Without Camps” vision, established under Presidential Decree No. 59, met yesterday, Sunday the 12th, with the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons, Paola Gavieri Betancur, to discuss the realities of internal displacement in Syria.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Raed Al-Saleh, Minister of Finance Mohammad Yasser Barnea, the Deputy Governor of Idlib, and the UN Special Rapporteur, according to the “Al-Khabar Al-Souri” website.

The meeting reviewed efforts made to ensure the safe and dignified return of displaced persons, as well as discussions on the humanitarian and service-related challenges facing displaced families, and ways to enhance cooperation between national authorities and the United Nations to support sustainable solutions.

During the meeting, the Steering Committee emphasized that the “Syria Without Camps” vision is based on ending the suffering of displaced persons by providing appropriate conditions for their return to their areas of origin, and rehabilitating infrastructure and basic services, thereby ensuring them a decent and stable life.

The Special Rapporteur listened to a presentation on the main challenges and needs, stressing the importance of respecting the rights of internally displaced persons and enhancing joint efforts to find sustainable solutions that adhere to humanitarian principles and human rights.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the need to continue coordination and dialogue among various parties, and to work on developing cooperation mechanisms that contribute to supporting the recovery process and improving the conditions of displaced persons in Syria.

The “Syria Without Camps” committee held its third regular meeting on May 6, presided over by the Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, with the participation of the Ministers of Finance, Public Works and Housing, Social Affairs and Labor, Local Administration and Environment, the governors of Aleppo, Idlib, and Hama, and members of the Executive Committee.

At that time, the participants discussed the progress of the initiative’s programs, reviewed the advances made in establishing an integrated data and information platform, and approved the formation of a financial committee aimed at strengthening financial and administrative discipline.
