Severe Labor Shortage Threatens Japan's Tourism Sector

A government report in Japan stated that more than 70% of accommodation facilities in the country are facing labor shortages amid a booming tourism sector, which serves as a key driver of the economy. This underscores the need for greater investment in automation and the provision of better benefits to attract workers. The annual White Paper on Tourism warned that the sector could fall into a “vicious cycle,” where increased workloads lead to higher staff turnover. The government conducted a survey between December and January, covering 522 accommodation facilities, of which 72.2% reported experiencing “labor shortages.” The report noted that managing the mounting pressure on existing staff during busy tourist seasons poses a significant challenge.
