Saudi innovation grants devices a "self-sovereign digital identity" to enhance cybersecurity

Researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have developed a new technology aimed at enabling electronic devices to prove their digital identity based on their unique physical characteristics, a step that could help reduce reliance on traditional passwords and security keys in the future. According to Al Arabiya Business, the study, published in the journal Nature Electronics, assigns each device a unique “digital fingerprint” through precision laser chips that generate a distinctive optical signature that is difficult to replicate or forge. The technology employs artificial intelligence techniques to analyze this fingerprint and verify the device’s identity quickly and efficiently, thereby enhancing security levels in digital environments with large numbers of connected devices. Laboratory test results indicate that the system achieves high-speed verification with low power consumption, making it suitable for cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence infrastructure applications.
