Nagelsmann resigns from coaching the German national team

German coach Julian Nagelsmann has submitted his resignation from the German national team following an early exit from the 2026 World Cup.

The Bild newspaper reported that Nagelsmann held an extended three-hour meeting on Thursday with leaders of the German Football Association (DFB), after being eliminated in the Round of 32 by Paraguay on penalties, following a 1-1 draw.

This failure adds to the mounting pressure on the German national team, which has now failed to advance far in the World Cup for the third consecutive time, having been eliminated in the group stage in both 2018 and 2022.

Bernd Neuendorf, president of the German Football Association, announced a comprehensive review into the reasons for the latest elimination, amid widespread criticism of the team’s performance and the atmosphere within the camp.

Bild noted that DFB officials granted Nagelsmann the opportunity to resign and time to consider his options, despite his contract running until 2028.

Meanwhile, attention is turning to Jürgen Klopp, the former manager of Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, who is described by several German media outlets as the favorite to take over the role.
