Indian Prime Minister to Iranian President: Essential to Ensure Freedom of Navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who briefed him on the latest developments in West Asia and the proposed path forward.

According to the Press Trust of India, the Prime Minister reiterated during his call with the Iranian President on Tuesday that freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is crucial for India and the world.

A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office stated that Modi welcomed the understanding reached and reaffirmed India’s firm position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

The statement added that during the phone call, the Iranian President briefed the Indian Prime Minister on the latest developments in West Asia and the proposed path forward.

Modi also posted on the X platform: “I spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian regarding the recent developments in West Asia. I welcomed the progress made in negotiations and expressed hope that sustained efforts will lead to lasting peace in the region. I reaffirmed the importance of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for India and the world.”

Earlier, President Pezeshkian had invited the Indian Prime Minister to attend the funeral ceremonies for the late Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, scheduled for next week.

According to reports, the Indian government plans to send Bihar Governor Ati Hasan and Minister of State for External Affairs Bapi Bora to represent India at the ceremonies. The funeral is scheduled to take place between July 5 and July 9.
