Bild: Nagelsmann to resign as Germany coach after World Cup farewell

The German newspaper Bild reported on Friday that Julian Nagelsmann, the national team coach, will resign from his post following an early exit from the FIFA World Cup. The report indicated that the 38-year-old manager agreed to step down after talks with senior German football officials.
Citing confidential information without providing further details, the newspaper stated that Nagelsmann decided to resign following a three-hour “secret summit” held on Thursday at the German Football Association headquarters in Frankfurt.
The German FA did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent via email on Friday.
The newspaper said Nagelsmann was urged to consider leaving voluntarily after he explained Germany’s elimination from the Round of 32 by Paraguay on penalties last Tuesday, and that he will receive compensation of approximately seven million euros ($8 million).
Germany’s defeat to Paraguay in Boston marked their third consecutive failure at the World Cup, following first-round exits in 2018 and 2022. Germany won the World Cup for the fourth time in 2014 in Brazil.
Nagelsmann, who took charge in 2023 and is the youngest coach to manage a knockout-stage World Cup match in four decades, said after the loss that he “is not the type to say ‘I will resign’ just because we have been eliminated from the tournament.”
Germany has won the World Cup title four times, in 1954, 1974, 1990, and most recently in 2014.
