This Day in Kuwait History

Kuwait City, July 6 (KUNA) -- On this day in history:
1961: Kuwait formally applied for membership in the United Nations.
1969: Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Salim Al-Sabah issued an emiri decree approving the agreement signed between the Government of Kuwait and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
1977: Kuwait Land Transport Company was established with a capital of 10 million Kuwaiti dinars.
1988: Artist Saud Al-Rashid died at the age of 66. He was one of the most prominent Kuwaiti artists of the 1950s and performed the first song on Kuwait Radio at the time of its inauguration, accompanied by a musical band.
2001: The Kuwaiti shooting team won first place in the team competition for the double trap event at the 16th Asian Shooting Championship held in Thailand, with a score of 382 points.
2015: The Municipal Council approved naming the Sixth Ring Road after the former Speaker of the National Assembly, Jassem Mohammed Al-Kharafi.
2019: Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Awadi, Minister of Health, Minister of Planning, and former Member of the National Assembly, died at the age of 83. He served as a Member of the National Assembly in 1975, was appointed Minister of Health, and later served as Minister of Planning and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs.
2020: The Cabinet decided to instruct the Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs to take the necessary measures to allow Friday prayers to be held in mosques, provided that adequate safeguards are in place to ensure compliance with health regulations, starting from July 17, as part of measures to combat the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
2022: Kuwait Petroleum Corporation announced the export of its first shipment of low-sulfur diesel to Naples, Italy.
2025: Law No. 83 of 2025 was issued, repealing Article 29 bis of Law No. 47 of 1993 concerning Housing Care, commonly known as the “Law on Those Who Sold Their Homes.”
2025: The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development signed two memoranda of understanding for development cooperation with the UK Department of Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth and Development to provide joint emergency humanitarian assistance to populations affected by conflicts in the Republics of Sudan and Somalia.
