Kuwait City, July 5 (KUNA) -- July 5:

1931 - Kuwait experienced an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located on Bubiyan Island at a depth of 33 kilometers.

1958 - Kuwaiti Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah signed a new oil agreement for the Neutral Zone with the Arabian American Oil Company (Aramco), granting the company exploration, research, drilling, and storage rights within the concession area for a period of 44 and a half years.

1961 - Kuwaiti Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah dispatched Finance Department Head Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, leading a delegation, to Arab countries to bolster Kuwait’s firm stance against the crisis instigated by Iraqi ruler Abdul-Karim Qasim and his false and baseless claims regarding Kuwait. The delegation visited Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, and Lebanon.

1973 - Sheikh Youssef bin Issa Al-Qana'i passed away at the age of 94. He was one of Kuwait’s prominent figures in science, religion, and law, serving as a judge for religious and personal status matters. He was a scholar of jurisprudence, history, and literature, and one of the founders of Al-Mubarakiya School in 1911, serving as its first director. He was a member of the Shura Council in 1921, the First Legislative Council in 1938, and the Second Legislative Council.

1993 - Kuwaiti Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah issued a decree appointing Dr. Faiza Al-Kharafi as Advisor for Higher Education (President of Kuwait University), making her the first woman in the Arab Gulf to hold the position of university president.

1997 - Three National Assembly members, Sami Al-Munees, Mishari Al-Asimi, and Ahmad Al-Milifi, submitted a motion of inquiry to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Nasser Al-Ruwain, regarding several issues they stated concerned public funds and laxity in enforcing the law. The inquiry concluded with the rejection of the motion to withdraw confidence from the minister.

2001 - Kuwait and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding in Tehran for security cooperation in combating drugs, smuggling, infiltration, and illegal fishing.

2003 - Kuwaiti voters went to the polls to elect 50 members of the National Assembly for its tenth legislative term from among 246 candidates. The number of voters reached 110,364, representing 81 percent of the 136,715 eligible voters.

2003 - Ibrahim Ali Kharbit passed away at the age of 90. He served as a member of the National Assembly from the first legislative term in 1963 until the fourth legislative term in 1975. He was one of the foremost defenders of Islamic causes and one of the sponsors of the proposal to nationalize oil.

2018 - The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development signed a loan agreement with Iraq worth 23.5 million Kuwaiti dinars to help finance the construction and equipping of schools in Iraq.

2018 - Sabah Al-Otaibi, former player for the Kuwait national team and Al-Arabi Club, passed away at the age of 61.

2019 - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to immediately and fully lift the ban on Kuwaiti sports, which had been in place since 2015, following the successful implementation of the roadmap agreed upon by all parties. This allowed Kuwait to resume its official participation in international sporting events.

2021 - Writer Ali Al-Hussein Al-Subaiti passed away at the age of 85, after a life rich in contributions through his literary and cultural works. He was one of Kuwait’s most prominent poets who witnessed the era of modern poetry.

2024 - Sheikh Ali Al-Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah passed away at the age of 78. He served as governor for several governorates, including Jahra, Capital, Ahmadi, and Mubarak Al-Kabeer. (End) M.B.R. / N.S.N.
